Jeep Wrangler Legacy

Though Jeep didnā€™t officially produce the ā€œWranglerā€ until 1986 with the release of the YJ platform, the model is a direct successor to the hyper-popular Jeep CJ, which ran from 1955ā€“1986 and included the CJ-5, CJ-6, CJ-7, and CJ-8 Scrambler. These models were the direct successor to the first civilian Jeeps produced by Kaiser/Willysā€“civilian variants of the military Jeep MB.Ā

Back to the official ā€œWranglersā€, the YJ rode on the success of the CJ, sporting a similar leaf-sprung, solid axle suspension. The Wrangler TJ was next-in-line, featuring an all-new quadralink suspension system with multi-link solid axles and the highly-acclaimed Rubicon. The immense success of the TJ carried its overall suspension design to the JK in 2007, which offered a complete redesign and two additional rear doors in the Wrangler Unlimited. The Wrangler JK persisted for over a decade until the release of the JL in 2018, which brought a sense of refinement to the platform. The Wrangler JL persists to this day, bringing us up to speed!Ā

The Wrangler is often viewed as the quintessential off-roader, featuring a small form factor, solid front and rear axles, and a no-nonsense, utilitarian design (up until the mid-2000s at least). The Wranglerā€™s devotion to off-road perfection has earned the model several awards, including:Ā

  • 10 consecutive SEMA "4x4/SUV of the Year" awards, until 2019

  • 2022 Four Wheeler SUV of the Year award

  • 2022 Womenā€™s World Car of the Year award

  • Best SUV Lineup from the 2021 Newsweek Autos AwardsĀ
